| WA state Rep. Jaime Herrera (R) is casting herself as an independent as she seeks one of the more centrist districts in the country.
"Quite frankly, the Republicans let me down, too," she said in a roundtable with reporters in DC today. "I was a staffer here when we had control of the House, the Senate and the White House," referring to her time as a senior legislative aide for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), for whom she handled health care issues. "And you know the across state lines bill? Awesome bill. Tremendous. We didn't pass it when we had control of all 3. We had the authority to do it, and it was not high enough on our radar screen to make it happen."

| Russell bows out of congressional race, endorses Herrera |
| Tuesday, 23 February 2010 |
|
| Washougal Mayor Pro Tem Jon Russell announced Tuesday that he is bowing out of the 3rd Congressional District race, has endorsed Republican state Rep. Jaime Herrera in that contest, and will run for Herrera’s 18th District legislative seat.
Russell said in a statement that since Herrera entered the race late last year, “there has been a dramatic negative shift in our fundraising ability. Many of my supporters have been torn in their loyalties between Rep. Herrera and me.”
“We were bringing in close to $10,000 a month between September and November,” he said in an interview. “Once Jaime got in in December, that dropped to $500 a month.”

| Former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton has endorsed state Rep. Jaime Herrera in her campaign for the soon-to-be vacated 3rd Congressional District seat.
Gorton, a Seattle Republican, served in the Senate from 1981 to 1987 and again from 1989 until 2001. He was narrowly defeated by Democrat Maria Cantwell in 2000 but carried Clark County that year.
In 2002, Gorton was named to the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, commonly known as the 9/11 Commission.

| Not Your Typical Candidate |
|
| State Rep. Jaime Herrera wasn't sure at first whether she should run for Congress in 2010.
There wasn't a light bulb moment, but more of the constant thought that she wanted to be a part of making the change she says America needs right now.
"We need to change direction," the Ridgefield Republican told The Chronicle during a visit to Centralia on Monday. "Whether you're Republican or Democrat, something's got to change. When you look at the stimulus, we still have high unemployment, and Lewis County is still around 14 percent. That's what's telling me what's going on over in D.C. is not working over here on Main Street."
