The first step to meaningful immigration reform is to secure our borders, and as a Member of Congress, I will work to give law enforcement the tools they need to do their jobs. Any real reform will start by stemming the flow of those entering this country illegally. I do not support amnesty for illegal immigrants. We must also make it tougher on those here unlawfully, which is why as a state legislator I have opposed this state’s practice of issuing drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants.
Fixing our economy is my top priority, and we must do whatever it takes to protect employment opportunities for American workers. I support the use of Electronic Verification, or E-Verify, to ensure potential employees are here legally. However, many business sectors depend on a flexible labor market. Improving guest worker programs in sectors that range from agriculture to high-tech will help business thrive. Our country has a tradition of compassion for those who respect the law and I intend to uphold that tradition. People willing to follow the legal path to citizenship should learn English and abide by our country’s laws. If they do, I believe America should always make room for those who want to come to our great country in pursuit of the American dream.
